Prof. Dr Raveesh B N

I am a native of Mysore and did my early schooling here. I did my Medical graduation in 1995 and MD (Psychiatry) in 1999 from prestigious Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Started my career as a lecturer in St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore. My passion to do Forensic Psychiatry took me to University of Leicester, UK where I completed MSc in Forensic and Legal Psychology. Further, I pursued my higher education related to law, mental health law, ethics and human rights which accounted for PGDMLE (NLSIU), PGDHR (IIHR), PGDMLS(Symbiosis), PGDMLE (De Montfort), LLB, LLM (IPR), MBA(Hosp.Management) and International Diploma in Mental Health Law & Human Rights (ILS-WHO). Currently, I have registered for PhD in Mental Health Law, Policy & Human Rights at Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy, Indian Law Society, Pune in collaboration with Vrije University, Amsterdan, Neatherlands.

During this pursuit I have received many academic awards like International Associateship (Royal College of Psychiatry, UK), Special scholarship (Greece, 2005), Young Scientist (Biological Psychiatry, Vienna, 2005), ICMD grant (Turkey, 2006), Young Fellowship (WPA, Venezuela, 2006) and Young Psychiatrist (WPA, Germany, 2007).

I continued in academics and served at various positions in three more medical colleges before settling at Mysore Medical College & Research Institute in 2007. I am a recognised postgraduate teacher in Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and evaluator of PG works for various Universities. I received prestigious Young Teacher award in the name of Prof. Raguram by Indian Psychiatry Society, Karnataka Chapter in 2012. I served National Indian Psychiatry Society as Assistant Editor and Editor for Indian Psychiatry Society Karnataka Chapter. I have organised State, Regional and International conferences related to Law & Psychiatry. I have more than 150 presentations at different level with 4 chapters in International Psychiatry books. I have authored 3 Kannada books to educate local population. With 38 publications and this book I look forward to pursue academics, do research collaboration and publications.

Before taking charge as Director of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (DIMHANS) Dharwad, I was working as Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, Mysore Medical College & Research Institute (MMCRI), Mysore. I was involved in Scientific Committee, Mutidiscpline Research Unit, Academic Society & Medical Education Unit of MMCRI, Mysore. Also, I am member of legal cell of Indian Psychiatry Society Karnataka Chapter and Member of Community cell of Karnataka State Mental Health Task Force, Government of Karnataka. Currently, President – Elect of Indian Psychiatry Society Karnataka Chapter. My area of interest is interface of Law, Ethics and Psychiatry. This gave me the opportunity to become the first Asian member for European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group (EViPRG). I am working with Prof Peter Lepping, Prof Rob Poole, Prof Catherine Robinson from Centre for Mental Health and Society within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in partnership with Bangor University to compare and raise the research awareness among the local setting.
